Going on 30
Okay. So 13 Going
on 30 isn't a lesbian movie, but it has Jennifer Garner
in it, so who cares?!
(it does have a token gay man, if that's any consolation,
for the politically correct groups out there.) 13
Going on 30 is
one of the most refreshing and enjoyable movies I have ever
seen! Jennifer Garner, from television's
Alias, the blockbuster movie Daredevil, and
Elektra, absolutely shines as the suddenly grown up
Jenna Rink, who wishes to be "30,
flirty, and thriving" on her 13th birthday. Garner embodies
a 13-year-old girl perfectly, acting both excited at the thought
of staying up late on a school night, and revolted at the site
of her boyfriend's "thingy"! While many reviews have compared
this movie to a female Big, it truly departs from the
formulaic "suddenly grown up overnight" movie by showing
Jenna what her life has become due to the choices she made when
she was 13. And Ms. Jenna doesn't like what she sees. 13
Going on 30 is laugh-out-loud funny and tugs at your heartstrings
at the same time. Don't miss this movie! |

Aimée & Jaguar
Felice Schragenheim (Maria Schrader), a Jewish member of
the resistance during the Third Reich, was a lesbian, the boldest
of a group of friends who led double lives while the war raged
around them. When she set her sights on Lilly Wust (Juliane Kohler),
the naïve wife of a Nazi officer, both became engaged in
one of the most perilous love affairs of the war. Former German
TV director Max Färberböck, making his directorial
debut, adapts Wust's memoirs to the screen in this "lustrously
shot, well-acted and immensely moving romantic drama" —San
Francisco Chronicle. (AC, AL, N, V) (2:01) Stereo/Letterbox/Subtitles

Amour
de Femme
Amour
de Femme is one of those rare movies that are moody, subtle,
and yet powerful all at the same time. A French film with English
subtitles, Amour de Femme tells the story of Jeanne,
a 35-year-old masseuse living in Paris, who has spent her entire
life making other people feel better. Attending a party with
David, her husband of seven years, Jeanne instantly connects
with Marie, a dancer performing at the party. Amour
de Femme is the kind of movie that you think about, watch
again, and enjoy even more the second time around as you capture
the nuance of the wonderful performance. Click here for full

Bar
Girls
Enjoyable little romantic comedy about an obsessive, incredibly
funny cartoonist, Loretta, who is continually looking for
that perfect significant other. When she actually finds her,
she thinks it's too perfect and all her neurotic, but funny
self-sabotage tendencies kick in. Clever dialogue between
Loretta and her best friend, tension-filled moments between
Loretta and the film's "bad
girl", as well as tender moments of self-awareness make up for the film's
obviously lacking depth. Kinda cheesy,
but an enjoyable 90-minutes nonetheless. |

Better
than Chocolate
Banned books, singing transsexuals, erotic bodypainting
moments, an innocent heroine, and sexy little artist all mix together
to create the wonderfully delicious "Better than Chocolate." Has
an awesome soundtrack, too, featuring Sarah McLachlan's "Ice
Cream" song, as well as "Sexy" by West End Girls. |

Butterfly
Kiss
When sheltered
gas station attendant Miriam (Saskia Reeves) reflects on her
attraction to Eunice (Amanda Plummer), an unhinged killer, she
simply explains, "The
things she did, everyone wants to do in a real way." Plummer,
who has excelled playing loopy waifs (The Fisher King) and hair-trigger
psychos (Pulp Fiction), is here a frightening vision of confused
anger, a possessed, pierced and bruised angel of death. Filmmaker
Michael Winterbottom (Jude, Go Now) and writer Frank Cottrell
Boyce present a violent and unsettlingly graphic tale of love,
insanity and codependence in this "road movie that suggests a twisted
British answer to Thelma and Louise" —The New York
Times. (1995)

The
Children's Hour
The Children's Hour, starring
Audrey Hepburn, Shilrley Maclaine, and James Garner, is definitely
a movie ahead of its time. Released in 1961 amid controversy, The
Children's Hour is a heartbreaking movie addressing very
real concerns for lesbians today. A dramatic entreaty at the
movie's close, brilliantly done by Maclaine, reflects thoughts
and feelings many lesbians have felt at one time or another,
and the unexpected, heartbreaking ending will have you in tears.
A must-see movie! Read the full

Chutney
Popcorn
Reena (Nisha Ganatra), an Indian-American lesbian, has grown
up in the shadow of her perfect sister, Sarita (Sakina Jaffrey).
When Sarita learns she can't get pregnant, Reena reasons she
can not only act as her sister's surrogate birth mother, but
also score some points with her demanding mom. But, of course,
life is more complicated in this lighthearted comedy of colliding
cultures and values, directed and cowritten by Ganatra. Law
and Order's Jill Hennessy costars as Reena's very American
partner. Winner of audience awards for best feature at the San
Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the
L.A. Outfest. (1999) TV14 (AC, AL) (1:31) Stereo/Letterbox. Read

Female
Perversions
A best-selling Freudian study
about women's sexuality might not seem the best source for a dramatic
feature, but first-time filmmaker Susan Streitfeld deftly takes
ideas from Louise J. Kaplan's Female Perversions: The Temptations
of Emma Bovary and suggests how deviant behavior may be merely
a manifestation of societal conditioning. Eve Stephens (Tilda Swinton)
is a high-powered attorney who is being considered for a coveted
position as a judge. But behind the expensive lipstick, the woman
who has it all is coming apart with feelings of repression and
inadequacy. With Amy Madigan as Eve's sister, a kleptomaniac with
a taste for lingerie and designer accessories. (1997) R (AC, AL,
N) (1:53) Stereo |

height of her career with the Ziegfeld Follies, Funny Girl follows Brice on
her way to stardom. Funny Girl was directed by William Wyler and written by Isobel Lennart and

Gia
Anyone who loves Angelina
Jolie will absolutely love this movie! The true story of the world's
first supermodel, Gia Carangi, Jolie brings life to the fast livin',
hard partying Gia. Beautiful Elizabeth Mitchell, (The
Santa Claus 2, Dr.
Kim from "ER") also
stars as Gia's one and only true love. Definitely a must-see movie!
The book is even better and contains more detailed information.
Also recommended is a documentary based on the life of Gia Carangi. |

the
Girl
"The first time I ask her, she
takes me home..." The moment those words are spoken,
you know this is not your traditional lesbian romance movie!
In fact, there is little traditional about the film adaptation
of Monique Wittig's story, the Girl. From the nuance of
characters without names, to the sparse dialogue and haunting
jazz soundtrack, the Girl is an intricate weaving
of all the classics—passion, jealousy, and revenge—tightly
rolled into 84 minutes of cinematic style and more than
a little erotic sizzle. Read the

If
These Walls Could Talk 2
HBO's second installment of their "If These
Walls Could Talk..." series, follows the lives of women
who love women. Segment one features Vanessa Redgrave in a riveting
performance about loss of love and rights during the 1950s. Act
two follows young women in search of their identity during the
free-loving 60's, and the last segment is a modern-day tale starring
Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres as partners who want to have a
baby. HBO has hit a home run with this series. |

Mango
Kiss (review
coming soon!)
We've had a chance to see Mango
Kiss,
but just haven't had time to write
up a review yet, so please check
back soon. One thing we will say,
Michelle Wolfe is definitely a
hottie!!!! Here's the official
buzz about the movie: Lou and Sass
are performance art partners and
best friends who have recently
moved to San Francisco. Shy Lou’s
life turns upside down when she
confesses her passion for the outgoing
Sass, and they change from roommates
to lovers. The path to romantic
bliss takes a wide detour, however,
when they meet new friends with
some rather frisky ideas.

they find the freedom to face old demons and to express their hidden yearnings.

her impressions of the vast Alaskan wilderness. Rated R.

Tipping
the Velvet
We absolutely loved this three-part BBC special based
on the Sarah Waters book of the same name. We haven't had
time to write a review yet, but here's the buzz about Tipping
the Velvet: "It's
Pride and Prejudice with dirty bits." That's
how screenwriter Andrew Davies (Bridget
Jones' Diary),
in an interview contained on this disc, describes his adaptation
of Sarah Waters's acclaimed novel of lesbian love, betrayal,
and redemption in Victorian England. The sterling writing
and performances will captivate even the most sensitive
viewers, making this groundbreaking miniseries, to quote
one character, "a
delightful evening... a rare treat." |

Lara
Croft: Tomb Raider
There's not a single bit of
sapphic scenes in this movie, but fans of Angelina Jolie won't
give a wit! Based on the computer game of the same name, Tomb
Raider is a mildly entertaining movie with incredible scenery,
great moves, and some fantastic stunts, most of which Jolie performed.
Diehard fans of the game will be sorely disappointed, but hey,
it's a movie, which means it's open for directorial interpretation.
Don't plan on being spiritually uplifted by the plot, but watching
Jolie in her skintight outfits is enough to inspire anyone.
Tomb Raider
Starring: Angelina Jolie,
Jon Voight. Rated PG-13.

When
Night is Falling
A film filled with nuance
and subtlety, When Night is Falling is destined to be
a classic. A chance meeting between Petra, a free-spirited circus
performer, and Camille, upstanding professor at a Christian college,
changes both their lives, and seems headed for disaster when
Camille's fianceé discovers
the truth. A beautiful love story played out under the Big Top.
We just wish this one would come out on DVD as it's one of the
best lesbian movies ever made in our opinion.
