Desperate
Housewives Update
Andrew
Comes Out and Marcia Cross Outing
Debate Continues

Everyone's
been in quite the uproar over the supposed outing of Marcia Cross
who plays Bree Van de Kamp on ABC's hit, Desperate
Housewives. Rumors began on the Internet, even
making it into traditional media. Finally, Marcia Cross made
a statement, as well as answered on television, that she was
not gay. A variety of commentaries are still running on the Web
that she, in fact, is gay and has a girlfriend. Here's what Michael
Musto of the Village
Voice had to say about the matter:
"The
good thing about last week's MARCIA CROSS mania is
that gay-celebrity rumors are finally as coverable
as straight ones—going there is no longer considered
a hideous smear campaign. And here's some background
on the story: At a recent Out magazine gala, Cross
told me, 'I have a gay uncle and I went to Juilliard,
where everybody is gay. [Smiling] I've thought of
turning gay myself.' 'Well, have another cocktail,'
I smirked. 'No, kidding!' she said, laughing. By
the way, my sources swear she does have a girlfriend—but
again, Marcia denies being a lesbian!"
Should
be interesting to see how this all plays out in the
end.
Well,
it's out....or rather Andrew is. Bree's screwed up son, Andrew,
is obviously the gay one. Susan (Teri Hatcher) catches Andrew
in the pool with another cute guy, to which he blurts, "I'm
not gay!" Okay, whatever. Guess you were just giving
the guy mouth-to-mouth before he drowns, right? While it
would have been more exciting for the storyline if Rex, Bree's
B&D-loving husband had turned out to be gay, it should
be interesting to see how Bree reacts to this news. She's
such a "Stepford" wife, with her perfect little
family falling apart right in front of her eyes, that this
latest development might just shake things up a bit around
Wisteria Lane.
In
case you've been living under a rock, Desperate
Housewives is the story of four, well,
desperate women living on Wisteria Lane. We meet
all the players in the pilot: dead narrator Mary
Alice (Brenda Strong) who kills herself to start
off the show with a bang (sorry, no pun intended!)
and leaves behind a very strange husband and teenage
son with a huge secret; Lynette (Felicity Huffman),
a miserable stay-at-home Mom who used to be a power
broker in the business world, but is now saddled
with totally out of control kids, and a scarce husband;
hot Gabrielle (Eva Longoria), the former model who
dallies with the lawn boy on a regular basis (maybe
she's been talking to Marissa about lawn boy attractions!),
trapped in a loveless marriage to hunky Carlos; and
single Mom Susan (Teri Hatcher), with a penchant
for locking herself out of the house naked, and attracted
to the hot, mysterious Mike. Then there's Bree Van
de Kamp (Marcia Cross) who is the Stepford Wife of
them all: everything must be perfect no matter the
cost, alienating Rex, her husband, and two children
in the process. Rounding out the cast of supporting
characters is Nicolette Sheridan as man-hungry Edie,
a constant thorn in Susan's side; nosy neighbor Mrs.
Huber, who has no problem blackmailing people to
get what she wants and gets more than she's bargained
for; cute lawn boy, John (Jesse Metcalf), who does
more than Gabrielle's lawn; and Mike (James Denton),
the hunky plumber / CIA agent / thief (who knows?!)
love interest of Susan.
Combine these four desperate women, mix in a mystery of major proportion, have
a couple dead bodies surface, bring in a couple of mysterious newcomers, and
you have the makings of a major hit for ABC. Desperate Housewives airs
on Sunday nights at 9/8 p.m. central on ABC. Stay tuned to find out who the
gay guy ends up being! All this plus blackmail, too. It doesn't get much better
than this!
